What is the Mother’s Mercado? 

Mother’s Mercado is a pop-up marketplace with a competitive twist! Our goal is to give mother-owned online businesses the opportunity to experience a retail experience, while inspiring the community. A Grand Prize is at stake for the handful of selected vendors participating in the Mercado. The top mother owned retailer that makes the best number of sales combined with bringing the most fans wins a pop-up location within the Shopify retail space in SHOWFIELDS NYC.  

 

What is Shopify? Why did you partner with Shopify?

Shopify is the leading multi-channel commerce platform. Merchants use Shopify to design, set up, and manage their stores across multiple sales channels, including mobile, web, social media, marketplaces, brick-and-mortar locations, and pop-up shops. The platform also provides merchants with a powerful back-office and a single view of their business, from payments to shipping. The Shopify platform was engineered for reliability and scale, making enterprise-level technology available to businesses of all sizes. Headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, Shopify currently powers over 800,000 businesses in approximately 175 countries and is trusted by brands such as Unilever, Kylie Cosmetics, Allbirds, MVMT, and many more.

 

Where do Mompreneurs apply? 

We will only accept online applications directly through our website: www.themomeconomy.com all emails, messages or mail submission will not be considered as an application. Visit our Mother's Mercado 2019 page for more information.

 

Are you only accepting applications from Mothers? 

Yes, applications need to be from e-commerce businesses that have a mother founder or co-founder, a mother CEO and/or mother ownership (>50%). We realize that this limits our pool of applicants but we feel this is an important part of our program and long-term initiative for assisting Mothers in business.   

 

What is The Mom Economy? 

The Mom Economy is a platform for working moms to thrive. A non-for-profit organization (501c3) for mothers who work, entrepreneurs, business owners and corporate employees all coming together for a common purpose—workforce development for mothers.  

 

What’s in it for the Mother-owned businesses? 

The benefits are that the selected Merchants will have the opportunity to sell their product during our one-day Mothers Mercado event in NYC on May 4th, 2019. Once selected as Merchant, you will enter into the chance to win the Grand Prize- a lease within the Shopify retail space in SHOWFIELDS for the month of May (valued at $10,000). 

 

Can you already have a retail store and participate in the event? 

No, if your business already has a commercial retail lease during the time of the application up until the event date (May 4th) your business does not qualify for the competition.  

 

What if I sell my product or goods in local retail stores wholesale and/or consignment? 

As long as your e-commerce business does not have it’s own retail lease you will qualify for the competition. Office spaces, participation in pop-up marketplaces, showrooms, and home spaces do not fall under “a legally binding “Retail Leasing Agreement” 

 

What types of products are eligible at TME x Shopify Mother's Mercado? 

To this point, we’ve purposely left our criteria broad to encourage the very best to apply. We are looking for uniqueness and a wide range of diverse categories, including clothing, jewelry, beauty, wellness, interiors, paper goods, and gorgeous giftables. 

  

What types of products are NOT eligible at TME x Shopify Mother's Mercado? 


Direct Sales & Multi Level marketing (Monat, Mary Kay, LulaRoe, It Works, LipSense, Scentsy, etc). 

Already have a retail lease or retail location 

National Franchises   

No food sales (no pre-packaged)  

No alcohol, beverages (water or soda) sales.  

Services that do not have a product or good associated with them. (Must have a tangible product or good available on hand to sell.)

 

What will selected merchants be responsible for? 

Merchants are responsible for all materials to make their booth a success, such as decor, product displays and product (ex: shipping costs to ship products to NYC).

Competitors will also be responsible for their travel accommodations (flight and room & board).

You must be in New York City between May 3rd-May 4th to participate. You must also have product inventory available during the month of May to qualify for the Grand Prize.   
 

Is there a cost to applying?

All Applicants, regardless of selection are required to pay a $150 application fee. Submitting the payment for an application does not constitute acceptance of your company as a Merchant, and the application fee is non-refundable.  

 
- To complete application process, Applicant must agree to pay the $150 application fee via credit card or PayPal. 
- Your application fee he will help cover the production costs associated with Mother’s Mercado. 

  

What dates must Mompreneur Merchants be available for participation? 

Must attend the full-day set-up on May 3rd and full-day Mother’s Mercado on May the 4th.  

There will also be a mandatory online bootcamp for all finalists to attend in April.  

 

Can a Mom Merchant sell food or a service? 

No.   

No Food sales (no pre-packaged consumable items)  

No alcohol, beverages (water or soda) sales.  

Must have a tangible product or good available on hand to sell.  

No Services that do not have a product or good associated with them. 

 

If I am the Grand Prize winner, What can I expect?

One (1) winner with the highest score will be awarded (i) sublease in Shopify’s retail space within SHOWFIELDS for May 11-31st 2019, (ii) Shopify will provide design consultation and support on experience buildout, as well as staffing.

Mother Merchant will not have to be in NYC during the month of May (May 11-31st lease period) to sell product they would just have to provide 1-3 SKU's of available product to sell on-site.
